Small Residential Installation: First Place – Japanese Makeover
The owners of this Novato home wanted to take their garden in a new direction – a Japanese influence. In addition, they sought to make it more useable and to reverse the layout of their patio and lawn. We worked with our friend, Cliff Murata, who has 20 years of specialized experience, to hand build the client’s Japanese-style dry creek, thus creating a spectacular anchor to this themed back garden.
Services Provided:
- Designed and installed themed garden including dry creek, bridge, lighted guidepost, drainage, Japanese fountain and lighting.
- Installed side yard pathways: one of seeded aggregate and one that recycled the flagstone from their former patio.
- Added the special little details such as creating a trellis to hide the air conditioning unit and acquiring a barbecue at a discount for the client so they could enjoy their summer nights.

Residential and Commercial Xeriscape: First Place – Water Conservation Garden
The client was most interested in creating a garden that used very little water and yet would be dramatic and interesting. The client mentioned she liked geometric designs, so triangle shapes were used again and again to create a unique design. The plants were chosen for their low water needs.
This project won the Best Xeriscape* Garden for the North Coast of California in 2006. Another award winning landscape that is located in San Rafael.
*Xeriscape, in Greek, means low water usage.
At the June 23, 2006 awards banquet in Petaluma, Novato-based Rayner Landscaping was recognized at the North Coast Chapter achievement awards for the California Contractors Landscape Association as demonstrating the highest quality of work in both the categories of Small Residential Installation and Xeriscape for two of the company’s Marin County projects.
The firm was the only company to receive the first place award in two installation categories in 2006.
In the category of Xeriscape, the firm was awarded the highest marks among residential and commercial landscaping projects that used native plants with high drought tolerance.
